Avoiding Rental Scams 101
Protect yourself and your investments.
Our mission is to empower landlords and property managers of all sizes to create welcoming rental experiences through positive interactions with their tenants.
The rental experience begins the moment a property manager decides to fill a vacancy and a renter starts their rental search. Often, the early stages of the rental process are when rental scams are most viable.
At Rentari.ai, we’re dedicated to protecting both property owners and renters from rental scams – a situation that is never positive for anyone.
How does Rentari.ai help you avoid rental scams?
- Review any verification information shown for the actual listing. A badge records particular checks; it does not guarantee that the rental is available, that every statement is accurate or that a payment request is legitimate.
- Compare the address, unit, terms and contact details across listings. Confirm the person's authority and any changed payment instructions through an independently verified contact channel.
- AI can highlight possible warning signs for your review. It does not authenticate an owner, approve an applicant or certify a listing as safe. Review our privacy policy before sharing information.
Is this listing a scam? Let our AI take a look.
Paste non-sensitive listing text or the relevant part of a message for an AI review. A URL alone may provide too little information: this checker does not independently verify the linked property's contents or availability. A low score or no warning signs is not a safety guarantee.

Rental Scam Tips For Landlords
Check unusual payment requests through a consistent process. Nationality, travel or choosing a remote viewing does not establish fraud.
- Someone sends more than the agreed amount and asks for a separate refund or third-party payment.
- A message pressures you to act before you can confirm the sender, payment or rental details.
- A material payment or document discrepancy remains unresolved after factual clarification.
Ask your bank through its verified channel about an uncertain check. Do not fund a separate refund from provisional credit; keep the check and messages securely. Use the payment-fraud guide and the consistent document-review process without turning an unverified warning into a housing decision.
Watch for cloned listings. Scammers also copy real listings and re-post them on other sites at a too-good rent with their own contact, to defraud renters in your name. Search your property address periodically while it is listed. If you list with Rentari.ai, Listing Protection scans the web for cloned copies of your listings and flags them for you to review and report.
Rental Scam Tips For Renters
Pause when an offer or payment demand cannot be verified. Compare the exact unit and terms and use an independently verified contact, rather than relying on pressure, a copied listing or a tour alone. The signs below call for checking the offer; they do not prove fraud or require every landlord to order a screening report.
- An unrealistically low price for the monthly rent.
- Requires no tenant screening, credit check, background check, or application.
- Be cautious when an unverified person insists on a wire transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency before you can confirm the rental and their authority. These payments can be difficult to recover. If you already paid, contact the bank or payment provider promptly through its official channel and ask about reversal or recovery options. Recovery is not guaranteed. Read the FTC's recovery steps.
Keep the listing link, dated messages and payment references securely, leaving sensitive identifiers out of a public report. A report to Rentari is separate from reporting suspected crime or asking a bank to recover a payment. The FTC rental-scam guide points to the posting website, local law enforcement, state attorney general and ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For cyber-enabled crime, review the FBI's IC3 guidance. Reporting does not guarantee a response, investigation, takedown or recovered funds. Be wary of anyone demanding payment while claiming to recover money for IC3.
