Rental definition
Adverse possession
A legal doctrine under which possession meeting jurisdiction-specific requirements for a required period may result in ownership rights. Unauthorized occupancy alone is not enough.

Where it matters
Obtain qualified local advice about the facts and property records. Do not attempt a lockout or disposal of belongings based on an assumption about title.

Separate possession, permission and title
Adverse possession is a potential route to ownership under specific legal requirements, not an automatic result of entering a home or refusing to leave. Cornell's overview describes commonly required actual, visible, exclusive, continuous and nonpermissive possession while emphasizing jurisdictional differences. Hostile in this context concerns the character of possession, not necessarily aggression. The required period and any additional conditions need local review; do not use a nationwide countdown or assume a tenant's permitted occupancy is adverse possession.
Identify the disputed land, actual use, dates, owner, claimed permission and available title or boundary records. Keep deeds, surveys, leases, written permissions, dated observations and communications together for qualified review. A fence, tax bill, mailing address or software account is not by itself a complete title determination. A boundary disagreement, an access claim and an occupant-removal case may raise different issues; ask a qualified local property lawyer which process addresses the actual facts.
Maintain an appropriate property-check and reporting arrangement, respecting lawful entry and privacy requirements for occupied rentals. Escalate unexpected use or a disputed claim promptly through the proper local process. Do not change locks, cut services, move boundaries or dispose of belongings on the assumption that the other person lacks rights. Clear records can support review, but screening, a listing and timestamped messages do not guarantee prevention or defeat of a claim. Rentari does not adjudicate title or carry out possession remedies.
