Rental definition
Credit score
A numerical estimate of credit risk produced by a particular scoring model from credit-report information. Scores differ across models and reporting dates.

Where it matters
Record the model and report date, use consistent written screening criteria, and review the underlying information rather than treating a number as the complete application.

Read the score's source, model and underlying report
A score summarizes credit-report information using a particular model; the report contains the underlying records. The CFPB report-and-score explanation notes that the reporting source, model, product and calculation date can produce different scores. Read the supplied range and explanation rather than borrowing another model's bands or treating one number as permanent.
A free credit report does not necessarily include a score. The CFPB's score-access guide explains that distinction. Use verified provider channels for access and errors; do not assume a paid repair service or new borrowing is necessary. Review the underlying information and any dispute instead of promising a particular score increase.
For a rental review, identify the actual package, model, date, missing information and applicable written criteria. A missing score is not a zero score, and a score does not verify current income or predict a successful tenancy. Use the report-review guide for identity checks, disputed records, lawful criteria and required notices before acting.
