Identify the item, owner and relevant coverage

A chair is a tangible movable item; property can also include intangible rights. The Cornell property overview distinguishes real property from personal property. Do not classify every appliance or installed item alike: attachment, agreements and applicable law can affect fixture and ownership questions. Obtain qualified review where an item's status affects a sale, lease or proposed removal.

For a furnished rental, keep supplied items separate from residents' belongings. Record the owner, description, identifying details where useful, condition, photographs and the agreed inventory version. Clarify permitted use, maintenance, replacement and return without assuming an inventory transfers ownership or makes every mark chargeable damage. Keep receipts and relevant handoff records; share only the information needed for the task.

Ask the insurer which person's property is covered, for which rental use, events, limits, valuation method and deductible. A landlord policy does not automatically cover every resident's belongings, and reimbursement depends on the actual policy and claim. Ask the assessor or tax adviser about local business-property reporting and treatment instead of applying a universal threshold. If belongings remain after departure, follow the applicable notice, storage and disposal process using local-source starting points; an apparently empty home does not make another person's property free to discard.
