Rental definition

Tenant

A person or entity with a right to occupy property under a rental agreement or applicable tenancy law. Tenancy status is determined by facts and law, not a portal label.

Identify each person's role and actual agreement

The Cornell lessee definition connects the tenant role with possession through a real-estate lease. In everyday rental communication, renter and tenant often refer to the person renting the home, while resident describes someone living there. These words do not establish a minimum stay or settle the legal status of every occupant. Read the agreement and applicable law alongside the actual facts.

Keep the named tenant, other authorized occupants, guests, guarantors and emergency contacts distinct. Record which person signs, occupies, pays or accepts a defined financial obligation. Receiving money, adding a portal contact or giving someone a key does not by itself explain the complete arrangement. If occupancy changes, use the occupancy-review guide and the appropriate consent or document process rather than simply changing a label.

Confirm the property, current term, payment instructions, included services, repair contacts and relevant responsibilities in the reviewed rental package. Do not assume every tenancy has the same deposit, pet charge, payment interval or end-of-term process. Preserve the executed documents and later changes, give the appropriate people usable copies, and limit access to private records. Questions about status, notice or ending occupancy need property-specific review; an unsigned document or a software account alone does not resolve them.
