What is a housing choice voucher inspection?

The short answer

Voucher-assisted housing must meet applicable program inspection requirements before or during assistance as required. Confirm the local public housing agency's current standard, timing and correction process.

Use the current program instructions

HUD has extended the HCV/PBV/Mod Rehab NSPIRE compliance date through January 31, 2027; implementation and other applicable requirements still need confirmation with the agency. Do not reuse an old checklist without checking its current applicability.

Prepare and document

Address known defects, provide required access and keep repair evidence. Ask how deficiencies, reinspection and payment consequences are handled. An owner checklist does not replace the official inspection result.

Example: repair completed after inspection

Send the evidence required by the agency and confirm whether reinspection or another approval is needed. Do not assume a contractor's invoice alone clears the deficiency.
