How much notice before entering a rental?

The short answer

Required notice depends on the jurisdiction, reason for entry and circumstances. Confirm the permitted purpose, timing and method; do not assume one national 24-hour rule applies everywhere.

Plan routine access

Offer the required notice and reasonable scheduling under local rules. Identify who will enter, why and any expected disruption. Preserve the communication and the actual access record.

Evaluate exceptions carefully

Emergency, consent and other exceptions vary. A convenience issue is not automatically an emergency, and possession of a key does not remove the resident's rights.

Example: contractor rescheduling

A vendor changes the visit time after notice was sent. Check whether the original notice still covers the visit and update the resident through the required process before entering.
