The short answer
Plan the move around confirmed dates, access, records, and a realistic budget. Keep the old-home closeout and the new-home condition check separate.

As soon as the dates are confirmed
Read the current and new agreements, verify any required move-out notice, and confirm when each home will be accessible. Record the full addresses and units, building move rules, vehicle access, elevator arrangements, and contact details. Allow for an overlap or storage gap where needed.
Choose which tasks you can safely handle and which need qualified help. Compare the full written moving scope, charges, timing, loss/damage terms, and cancellation conditions. For an interstate move, use FMCSA's official registration and consumer resources; local-move requirements may differ. Keep estimates and final documents.
Pack a room at a time
Sort belongings into keep, donate, dispose, and move before buying supplies. Use sound boxes appropriate to the load, label the destination room, and number boxes against a simple inventory. Protect fragile items and keep a separate record of valuable belongings and their condition.
Pack nonessential items first. Keep medication, identification, important documents, chargers, clothing, basic food and hygiene supplies, and necessary pet items accessible for the journey and first night. Arrange safe supervision and transport for children and animals during loading.
Arrange services and the address change
Confirm utility stop and start dates with the responsible providers, including any services the landlord or building supplies. Record account confirmations and avoid an unintended gap in essential service. Check internet installation and access appointments ahead of time.
Use the official USPS change-of-address process and update banks, employers, insurers, benefit agencies, and other important senders directly. Forwarding does not update those organizations for you or reach every class of mail. Ask your insurer about the move dates, transit, storage, and any gap in cover rather than assuming all belongings are covered everywhere.
Close the old home carefully
Review the agreed cleaning, access return, and any applicable inspection process. Follow product instructions and obtain necessary permission before painting, filling holes, or making repairs. Do not undertake unsafe work or assume every mark requires replacement.
Record the final condition with clear dated notes and photos, compare the move-in record, and preserve any resident comments. Confirm return of keys or credentials and provide the appropriate forwarding contact. Deposit deductions and return deadlines depend on the applicable rules and evidence; cleaning does not promise a full refund.
If you need storage
Measure the items, check the proposed unit's usable space, and compare access hours, climate conditions, security arrangements, prohibited items, insurance terms, total price, and exit notice. Ask about minimum terms and additional charges before relying on a promotion.
Keep an inventory and necessary contact details. Make sure the unloading plan is safe and leaves needed items reachable. Do not assume a quoted storage size or included vehicle will fit every household's move.
On move-in day and afterward
Inspect the actual unit before unpacking where practical. Record existing defects, confirm working access and essential services, and send the condition record through the agreed channel. Keep the receipt and follow-up plan for unresolved work.
Place furniture using measured dimensions and clear exits. Unpack essentials first, then one room at a time. Dispose of packing materials through the building's permitted process. Check payment instructions, maintenance contacts, and everyday household responsibilities with the landlord, and retain the complete moving record.
