Answer · Rent & payments

Should I accept cash for rent?

The short answer

Review the lease, local rules and your ability to document cash safely. If cash is accepted, use a clear receipt and record the payment promptly against the correct tenancy and period.

Set a safe collection process

Agree where and how payment is received and who is authorized to accept it. Avoid arrangements that expose either party to unnecessary personal-safety risks. Check any receipt requirements and provide a reliable alternative where appropriate.

Issue a useful receipt

Record the date, amount, payer, property or unit, rental period and recipient. Give the tenant a copy and retain your own. If a balance remains, make that clear without obscuring how the payment was applied.

Reconcile the deposit

Record the cash receipt once and match it to the eventual bank deposit. Do not count the deposit as a second rent payment. Retain supporting records and separate rent from other funds handled under different rules.

Your next-step checklist

  • Define an authorized recipient
  • Provide a complete receipt
  • Record the payment once
  • Match it to the bank deposit
